A Rainy Monday
It rained today for the first time. I was buying eggs with my mom and little sister when the downpour began. We rushed through the streets avoiding the puddles and slipped through the front door of our home to take cover. The rain beat down hard on the tin roof. I watched and listened while it lulled me into sleepy thoughts. I helped my mother make banana pancakes over the wood burning stove as the rain continued to fall. The dog started to shiver and then moved to a burlap sack on the ground by the stove. She doesn't like the rain. I sat on the plastic stool and watched my mother flip the pancakes. My aunt placed a small round bucket on the ground where the water leaked through a hole in the roof. The smell of a fresh rain mixed with bananas created an inticing aroma. My little sister stared at the water running down the windows and then giggled as the thunder roared in the sky. She never ceases to entertain me. For ten solid minutes the rain beat down. My aunt started sweeping the water away from the doors while my grandpa hurried to the roof to grab his machete. I hope it doesn't rust. My mom laughed and the sound was comforting when it mixed with the sound of the rain. We sat and stared at the sky and the rush of water began to lighten. The rain storm turned into a light mist and the clouds opened up. It only lasted moments, but it seemed to have a refreshing effect on everything it touched. All that is left are drips falling from the flowers and puddles collecting in the corners. It was the first rain of many.
